Expanded Panama Canal increases congestion at US East Coast ports

They note that delivering cargo from Asia by sea to US East Coast ports, including New York, is now cheaper and faster. Previously, transport routes were built through West Coast ports, and from there containers and other cargo, including energy, were sent to the eastern United States by rail or road transport across the entire continent.

The Panama Canal, opened in 1920, connects the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In September 2007, it was decided to build a new sluice gate. The reconstruction ended on June 26, 2016.
