Joker was originally intended to be a standalone film, with Warner Bros. intended to kick off the DC Black Label film series. By August 2019, Phillips expressed interest in making a sequel, although he reiterated that Joker was not intended to do so. In October 2019, Phoenix hinted that he was going to reprise his role. The sequel officially entered development in June 2022, with Gaga and Beatz joining later that year. Principal photography took place in Los Angeles, New York and Belleville from December 2022 to April 2023.
